Keeping with the trends

Untitled - 5.jpgTrends in the scaffolding and formwork market are changing in keeping with the times. With 100 per cent FDI allowed under the automatic route in township development, built-up infrastructure and construction projects, a lot of foreign players are entering the market.

As a consequence, "We are witnessing a lot of innovation in scaffolding and formwork systems in India," foreign promoter Dr Sudesh Yadav, an investor in the Indian scaffolding industry and Director of DANA Group, said.

The latest demand trends indicate increased preference for aluminum scaffolding, especially for low-rise projects and suspended scaffolding, because of its ease of use, light weight and portability.

The sector has been witnessing a sharp rise in demand due to the shift towards infrastructure development. Scaffolding is necessary for the construction of multistorey buildings as well as structures in other sectors like power, oil and gas, airports, and road and bridges. Industry activities include design, production, sales, erection, monitoring and inspection along with dismantling of fixed/modular scaffolding.

Dr Birbal Singh Dana, Managing Director, DANA Group of Companies, Dubai, said, "Simple and efficient design of scaffoldings allows beating the contract schedule, maintain lower labour costs and simultaneously provide high quality finish to the project. Sustainability of scaffolding thus offered is higher than traditional scaffolding and is better suited for long life of projects."

For Financial Year 2011-12, an allocation of over `2.14 crore is proposed to be made in infrastructure sector, which is 23.3 per cent higher than the allocation in FY11 and accounts for 48.5 per cent of the total budget. This will boost demand for scaffolding. Apart from government investment, private investment in high rises and residential and commercial development is also spurring growth in demand for scaffolding.

All said and done, the scaffolding and formwork market is yet to achieve a higher level of awareness about new products like customised steel scaffolding and aluminum formworks.
